Clean Energy - Hydrogen, Batteries and Fusion
This session will demonstrate how RIs and TIs are central to Europe’s transition toward a clean, secure, and affordable energy future, focusing on hydrogen, advanced batteries, and nuclear technologies. The objectives are to illustrate the full value chain, from pioneering research and piloting, through to deployment at an industrial scale, and to identify how collaboration between infrastructures and private actors accelerates innovation cycles.
Speakers have been chosen to provide a breadth of perspectives—ranging from research leaders driving fundamental breakthroughs, to industrial partners enabling large-scale application, to policy experts shaping enabling frameworks. Their interventions will showcase successful technology transfer, validation, and demonstration projects, highlighting ways that infrastructure investments underpin societal transitions to carbon neutrality.
The expected outcome is a set of tangible recommendations on how to strengthen the ecosystem connecting RIs/TIs with the energy sector—identifying gaps, opportunities for greater impact, and pathways for more effective integration into European energy and climate strategies.

Speakers and panelists
Milena Roveda
Gauss Fusion
Milena Roveda is CEO of Gauss Fusion, guiding its mission to industrialize fusion energy in Europe since 2023. With over 30 years’ global leadership experience—spanning finance, transformation, and strategy at firms like Bayer and Carlyle— she excels at driving innovation, building alliances, and getting things done.
Nicole Ciacotich
FORCE technology
Nicole Ciacotich is Senior Director at FORCE Technology, where she leads the Materials Test & Analysis and Materials Consultancy departments. She is also responsible for the Hydrogen Technology Testing Centre in Brøndby, which provides advanced testing of materials and components under hydrogen atmosphere conditions. Her work supports the development of safe and efficient hydrogen infrastructure through materials compatibility testing and advanced characterization.
José Luis Martinez
Chair of ESFRI
Presently, chair of the European Strategic Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), joint forum between Member States, Associated Countries and European Commission. Previously, Associated Director of Institut Laue Langevin (Grenoble, France), Director of ESS-Bilbao (Bilbao, Spain). Deputy Director General for Research in the Spanish Ministry of Research and Innovation (Madrid, Spain) and Research Professor in Material Science at CSIC (Madrid, Spain).
Julie Mougin
CEA
Julie Mougin holds a PhD in materials science before joining industry to work in energy and automotive sectors. She has led the development of hydrogen technologies at CEA/Liten since 2005 as head of laboratory and division, and is now Deputy Director for hydrogen technologies at CEA/Liten. She coordinates EU hydrogen projects, is board member of Hydrogen Europe Research, and contributes to EU roadmaps and standards. Author/co-author of 65+ publications, five book chapters, and nine patents (H-index: 27).
